The Rose Field

The final volume of Pullman’s The Book of Dust triology

21 November 2025

Read Philip Pullman’s latest book this week, The Rose Field which is part of The Book of Dust triology. The book takes place 10 years after the events of His Dark Materials. I loved the original triology and really enjoyed the new story in the latest books, so was looking forward to it all tying up in this final one.

I love the world he’s built and the last two books journeying through the Levant and Caucasus we’re fun. The concept of dæmons is still brilliant and fun to imagine. One time whilst I was reading it, Maude was lying up against my leg sleeping and I wondered if I had a dæmon, would it be Maude? I think I’d be happy with that.

It perhaps felt like it all ended a little quick with quite a few dangling storylines that didn’t really resolve and left me wondering. It think this was his critique of capitalism (like his earlier triology was a critique of religion).

About me

Jon Heslop is a web developer based in Walthamstow, he lives with his wife Rebecca and their dog, Maude. He enjoys cycling, cooking and hanging out with friends.

Enough of the third person... I was born in London, grew up on the Wirral before coming of age in the Midlands (somehow that’s the accent that mostly stuck). I went to university in London and then spent a while in West Wales.

I’ve been building websites since I was a teenager and I have been very lucky with the places and people I’ve worked with over the years.
